138T Shingle Recover – Standing Seam Metal Roof System

Energy-Efficient Metal Roofing Transformation

McElroy Metal’s 138T Shingle Recover System installs directly over existing shingles and creates an Above-Sheathing Ventilation airspace for improved energy efficiency. Its symmetrical panel design allows installers to start and stop anywhere on the roof and even replace single panels.

The result: lower heating and cooling costs, reduced landfill waste, and faster installation with less disruption.

138T Shingle Recover Ideal Applications

  • Residential or light commercial reroofing projects over existing asphalt shingles.

  • Projects where minimizing tear-off, waste, and disruption is a priority.

  • Installations over solid decking where enhanced ventilation and thermal performance are desired.

  • New construction or retrofit applications that require a lightweight, mechanically seamed metal roof system.

138T Shingle Recover Top 3 Benefits

  1. Patented Above-Sheathing Ventilation (ASV) Design: Creates a continuous, multidirectional airflow between the existing roof and new metal roof, reducing attic temperatures and improving building energy performance.

  2. No Tear-Off Required: Installs directly over most existing shingle roofs—saving time, labor, and disposal costs. (Check local codes for layer limitations.)

  3. Sustainable and Cost-Efficient: Reduces landfill waste, lowers long-term energy bills, and provides the longevity of a full-performance 138T standing seam system.

138T Shingle Recover/ASV Clip Details

The patented 138T Shingle Recover/ASV Clip is installed with two fasteners into the existing substrate and allows for a 3/4" ASV airspace between existing and new roofs.

This illustration details ASV airflow and venting. Air enters via perforated eave trim and moves upward between the existing and new roof. The heated air then escapes through a corrugated panel and vented ridge trim.

Frequently Asked Questions

The questions below address common considerations and help guide product selection for your project.

How does Above-Sheathing Ventilation (ASV) improve energy efficiency?
The ASV system allows continuous airflow between the new 138T roof and the old shingle roof, creating a thermal break that can significantly reduce heating and cooling loads.
Can the 138T Shingle Recover System be installed over multiple shingle layers?
Typically, yes—over one or two layers, depending on local building codes and deck condition. Always verify local requirements.
Is underlayment required?
Not for recover applications. For new construction over solid decking, underlayment is required.
Does the system work for both residential and commercial buildings?
Absolutely. The 138T Shingle Recover System is designed for both residential and light commercial use, providing high performance and visual appeal for either market.
