Energy Star Roofing
EPA’s Energy Star® program is familiar to many homeowners who see the label on appliances and electronic equipment. Energy Star also has a Roof Products component for cool roofing. A roof that meets the Energy Star performance requirements is considered one that is cool and helps to reduce urban heat island effects. The criteria for an Energy Star compliant roof are:
- For steep slope applications (greater than 2:12 pitch): initial minimum solar reflectance of 0.25, and 3-year aged
minimum solar reflectance of 0.15. - For low slope applications (2:12 or less pitch): initial minimum solar reflectance of 0.65 and 3-year aged minimum solar reflectance of 0.50.
