Exposed Fastener Roof Panel Options

Max-Rib is a low-profile (¾") panel widely used across residential, agricultural, and light commercial applications due to its clean appearance and cost efficiency. Common across the industry, it is available in a range of substrates and coatings. For long-term performance, McElroy recommends Galvalume steel with Kynar 500® (PVDF) coatings to enhance durability and resistance to fade and chalk.

Multi-Rib is McElroy’s proprietary version of the industry-standard R-Panel, widely used in residential, commercial, and post-frame applications. Featuring 1¼" major ribs at 12" on center, it delivers a bold, structural profile. An optional Purlin Bearing Leg (PBR) provides additional support at the panel lap when installed over framing or decking.

R-Panel is a 1¼" major rib profile with 12" on-center spacing, designed for roof and wall applications in commercial and industrial construction. An optional Purlin Bearing Leg (PBR) supports panel laps over substructural framing or roof deck.

Mega-Rib is a 7.2 exposed fastener panel that provides optimum strength and spanning capabilities. Mega-Rib is a metal roof and wall panel that is equally well suited for industrial and commercial applications.

Modern-Rib combines the economics of an exposed fastener panel but with major ribs that simulate standing seam panels.

Modern-Rib is available with Silicone Modified Polyester (SMP) and Kynar 500® (PVDF) coatings. For long-term performance and curb appeal, McElroy always recommends PVDF coatings.

M-Cor is a classic corrugated roofing and wall panel. M-Cor features a 1/2" rib height. These corrugated panels are also commonly used for residential siding applications, installed both vertically and horizontally.

Multi-Cor is a classic corrugated panel with a ⅞" rib height, used for both roof and wall applications. Its versatile profile is commonly installed vertically or horizontally across residential, commercial, and agricultural projects.

Mesa is a low profile (3/4") panel that is similar in appearance to Max-Rib. However, Mesa is both patent and copyright protected, which means it can't be copied by manufacturers offering lower quality steel substrates and coatings. Mesa is a great choice for building owners that want quality assurance and a distinct appearance that can't be copied.

McElroy’s 5V panels are 24" wide and incorporate a classic design that adds beauty to any home. 5V is especially popular along coastal areas in the South and Southwestern USA.

Instaloc is a snap-together standing seam system that features a 1” seam and is installed with concealed clips. Instaloc is designed to be used with solid decking and the low profile seam makes the panel an excellent option for residential applications.

Frequently Asked Questions

The questions below address common considerations and help guide product selection for your project.

What are exposed-fastened roof panels?
Exposed-fastened roof panels are metal panels secured through the face of the panel with color-matched fasteners. This system provides a cost-effective, durable roof finish for agricultural, commercial, industrial, and residential applications.
Are exposed-fastened panels suitable for commercial buildings?
Yes. Many commercial, retail, and light industrial buildings use exposed-fastened panels for their durability, speed of installation, and wide color selection.
Are exposed fastened-roof panels compatible with other McElroy systems?
Yes. Exposed-fastened panels integrate easily with McElroy soffit, fascia, trim, and many roof systems for cohesive building design.
How long do exposed-fastener panels last with Kynar 500® vs. SMP finish?
Exposed-fastener panels with Kynar 500® PVDF finish are engineered for long-term color stability with significantly less chalk and fade than SMP over 15 to 20 years of UV exposure. SMP panels in standard commercial and agricultural applications deliver strong performance and are appropriate where premium color retention is not a specification priority. Panel longevity is also a function of gauge, substrate, and installation quality — contact your McElroy service center for guidance on coating selection for your specific application and climate.
What gauges are available for exposed-fastener roof panels?
McElroy exposed-fastener panels are available in 29 GA, 26 GA, and 24 GA depending on the profile and application. 26 GA is the standard for most commercial and agricultural applications. 24 GA is available for high-wind and heavy-load commercial projects. 29 GA is an economy option for agricultural and low-load applications. Gauge availability varies by panel — confirm with your service center when specifying.
What is the difference between Max-Rib Ultra, Max-Rib II, and Max-Rib Commodity?
All three are variations of McElroy's Max-Rib panel differing in substrate and paint system. Max-Rib Ultra uses Galvalume® substrate with Kynar 500® PVDF finish — the highest performance tier, recommended for residential and premium commercial applications. Max-Rib II uses Galvalume® with SMP finish. Max-Rib Commodity uses alternative substrates and is suited for economy agricultural and low-budget applications. Matching the right tier to the application is important for both project economics and long-term performance expectations.
Can exposed-fastener panels be used on low-slope roofs?
Exposed-fastener panels are generally recommended for slopes of 3:12 and above. On lower slopes, endlap sealing becomes critical and panel selection should account for the risk of water migration under laps. For slopes below 3:12, a standing seam mechanically seamed system is typically a better specification. Consult with your McElroy technical rep before specifying exposed-fastener panels on slopes under 3:12.
